What is “Teach for Islam”?

Teach for Islam is a project dedicated to join the Muslim masses around the world with the wealth of knowledge available in the Muslim ummah in all matters of benefit. The project will include actively seeking out Muslim academics, professionals, entrepreneurs, skilled trainers and to market, facilitate and organise lectures and courses both online and onsite with interested students, apprentices, trainees and the general masses interested in those topics. The lectures and programs will be recorded and be available for free download from a free web portal and the best of which will be developed and broadcasted on satellite TV. Thus essentially, the Teach for Islam project will be dedicated to finding, producing and publishing Muslim scientific, technological, academic, social, literary experts and professionals who would be more than happy to share their knowledge with the Muslim ummah for its betterment.

Why?

The biggest gap in the Muslim world which correlates with its backwardness is the lack of emphasis on excellence in knowledge. Muslims in general are some of the least educated and skilled. This is a dual problem of the lack of avenues for them to seek knowledge as well as lack of resources to seek education. On top of this, the most talented and skilled individuals in the Muslim world seek work and employment in western countries leading to a never ending brain drain of qualified talented intelligent scholars of the various branches of knowledge. However this lack of knowledge in our Ummah is clearly a need that our intelligentsia perceive and are troubled by. At this time, there is rarely a way for Muslim professionals such as engineers, financial consultants, businessmen, doctors, artists, chefs, academics, management consultants etc. to contribute to the Muslim Ummah except by way of giving some part of their money to Islamic causes and rarely through a project that may use their expertise in their field of speciality. However, the greatest value that they can provide to the Ummah which would go far more than any wealth that they can give – is essentially their knowledge whose value has no limits. The knowledge that they have amassed – if there was a way to pass this on to the Ummah en masse – then this would potentially create a greater lasting impact. This is precisely what Teach for Islam aims to achieve – to be the intermediary that helps these scholars and professionals to reach out and receive greater exposure to their knowledge.

Teach for Islam will show non-Muslims the high calibre Muslim intelligentsia that exists in this world and allow them the opportunity to appreciate the depth and breadth of knowledge base from the Muslim world. Apart from being a tool for dawah, it will also serve to open pathways and bridges for cooperation.
